a breaking update just within the last couple of minutes, will, we have been able to reopen the eastbound travel lanes at the bay bridge. so that is certainly breaking news. we do currently again have the eastbound travel lanes just reopened at the bay bridge. the hazmat incident began about 3:30 this afternoon. a tanker truck was leaking propane. it was on westbound u.s. 50 just prior to the bay bridge. and at that time, the westbound lanes were closed and emergency officials also closed the eastbound travel lanes to maintain a radius of safety around that vehicle. >> do we know what caused the leak? >> caller: at this point, police will -- and emergency officials will be going over the tanker vehicle and investigating it. at this time though we don't have answers as to why it was leaking. >> so any idea how long the other lanes will be shut down?

i imagine well into the evening commute. >> caller: at this point, exactly. we do not have an estimate for reopening those lanes westbound. there obviously does need to be hazardous material clean-up in that area. and the maryland department of the environment you know has been on the scene along with a host of emergency crews and officials. the actual vehicle has been removed. the leak has stopped. but that's why we were able to reopen the eastbound lanes but there still does need to be some clean-up. we really do appreciate drivers' patience and if they don't have to go out to the bay bridge, we are urging them to not -- not go there at this point. >> all right, kelly with the maryland transportation authority, again the breaking news from kelly, the eastbound lanes have reopened. you can see this now from our live picture. via sky fox. kelly if there's a change we'll check back with you. >> caller: okay, thank you

will. >> thank you. another big story we're following tonight. a virginia woman leads police on a bizarre chase across two states. >> at one point a security officer at walter reed was forced to open fire on the suspect after she tried to ram she vehicle into -- her vehicle into an entrance in bethesda. but that didn't stop here. fox 5's paul wagner joins us live in rockville where the chase finally ended. paul what can you tell us? >> caller: look at this, this is a very strange story that began when virginia state police clocked the woman doing 93 miles per hour on inbound 66 approaching the beltway just before noon today. it then escalated outside the new walter reed where a security officer says this woman tried to run into him. that's why he was forced to pull his weapon and open fire and firing just once. but it didn't stop there laura. it continued and the woman went up cedar lane, up on to old georgetown road and then ended

here on the street where she ran into a fence. this is how it ended for angela cobalt. fighting with police after crashing her car in rockville. just minutes before, police say she pulled a series of bizarre u-turns outside the new walter reed national military medical center. before hitting two vehicles including a police cruiser. at about 11:50, we're told a black mitsubishi with an african-american female drove from 355 on to the entrance ramp here at this military facility. >> she made a u-turn and then stopped in traffic much like it's stopped right now waiting for the traffic signal to change. law enforcement or security personnel came up to her, attempted to speak with her. we're told they noticed her biting or attempting to eat a bar of soap. >> reporter: from there police

say cobalt then drove out on to rockville pike again. where she made a u-turn and came back towards the officers. >> an officer approached her, she wouldn't roll down her windows and she actually took her vehicle, left the roadway, crossed over the sidewalk and traveled up the grassy portion towards this crosswalk. >> reporter: that's where police say a naval security officer opened fire hitting cobalt's vehicle but missing her. she then drove up the pike on the wrong side of the road. before eventually crashing into a fence iononeville street. witnesses say before crashing her car, the driver had lost all the rubbefrom one, possibly two tires and was riding only on the rims. we got a briefing from a authorities outside the new walter reed just before 3:00 this afternoon. and there was some question as to whether or not there was one or two security officers there. we kw now from montgomery county police that a security officer first tried to use one

of those metal batons. telescoping metal batons called an asp baton and he actually knocked out one of the window truce get her attention. he then folked out a second one before she continued to the second officer who was then forced to fire he says. that didn't take effect and she continued to drive up to rockville. laura? >> quite an ordeal today. paul, thank you. we are on top of a news alert out of falls church tonight where police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man accused of sexual assault. they say he may be linked to five similar cases in fairfax county last month. the latest incident happened friday afternoon. a woman told police she was walking with a baby stroller along south maple avenue and gibson street when a man groped her. she dent -- he didn't let go until she screamed. police revested the sketch -- released is this crepe of the suspect. -- this sketch of the suspect. the prince george's county boy who admitted to killing his

2-year-old foster sister will now spend time in a therapeutic group home. the 13-year-old entered an alfred plea to charges of involuntariments. that means he wasn't -- involuntary manslaughter. that means he wasn't admitting guilt but he knew he could be convicted. the judge didn't say exactly how long the boy must live in the home but he won't be around any children under the age of 18 and his contact with his family will be supervised and limited. prosecutors say he beat the girl to death in july but they don't know why. a former cia agent is facing two and a half years in prison for leaking the names of covert agents to a journalist. john kuriaky pleaded guilty to it. he was facing up to 45 years in prison if convicted. as part of the plea deal. prosecutors dropped charges that had been filed under the world war i espionage act. they also dropped a count of

monster energy drink products. the fda says five people have died over the past three years after drinking monster energy. the incident reports were recently obtained under the freedom of information act by the mother of a 14-year-old maryland girl who died back in december from a heart arrhythmia after drinking two cans of monster energy in a 24 hour period. >> she was gasping for air. i mean it was just -- she was making these awful noises. and i checked, she had no pulse and her heart was still beating. got her on the floor. and her heart had stopped and i -- started cpr. >> mrs. crosslynn wants to make sure that energy drinks are regulated by the fda just like soda is regulated by the fda. just like no doz pills are regulated by the fda and we also believe that energy drinks need much better warnings on them. >> a monster energy spokesperson said last week its products were safe and not the

cause of the teenager's death. joining us now with more on this is dr. eric chauvitz. he's at shady grove adventist hospital. >> my pleasure will. >> have 249-milligrams of caffeine, which -- is about seven times the amount of caffeine in just a 12-ounce cola. are you concerned about these drinks? >> well, i'm concerned about large amounts of caffeine intake in children. i mean that's the concern right now. caffeine is a stimulant. the american academy of pediatrics recommends less than or equal to 100-milligrams of caffeine per way for adolescents,. so however they're getting the caffeine if they're having too much caffeine, it could be a problem. >> so the fda although it's investigating the allegation which is date back to 2004 is saying the reports don't necessarily prove that the drinks caused the deaths or injuries. what would the fda be looking at to make a determination of a

possible link? >> well, i really can't comment on the case that i didn't personally take care of the patient. however, the concern would be if you're taking large amounts of caffeine for a young person it's going to cause your heart rate to go faster. your blood pressure to go up. it can lead to excitability. and if certain people have certain neurological cardiac conditions they shouldn't have large amounts of caffeine which can lead to seizures and cardiac problems. >> in the case of the 14-year- old maryland girl who died she did have an inherited disorder that can weaken blood vessels, but she died due to caffeine toxicity. what's that and how common is it? >> caffeine toxicity is if you have too much of caffeine. they talk about in many, many cups of coffee version of it. the average person is usually drinking anywhere from one to two cups of coffee a day. but that's a lot more than that. i can't really comment again on the case. i didn't take care of the

patient. but caffeine toxicity would be irritability and increased blood pressure and cns problems. >> i was just going to ask you, what besides the increased heart rate? other symptoms consistent with having too much caffeine. especially in a newsroom. coffee after coffee all day long. >> trust me i'm an e. r. doctor, we're drinking coffee after coffee for shift work all day long. the other issues are irritability and you have too much of it you could have headaches, seizures, and problems --ic tates a large -- it takes a large amount for the average person of the problem with this. but again children are children. they're not just tiny adults, because they're smaller their body doesn't process the same drugs the way that i and you do. so one cup of coffee? a 200-pound adult -- in a 200- pound adoubt is not the same in a -- adult is not the same in a child. >> once again monster says it is unaware of any fatality anywhere that's been caused by

i started the day at the morning news meeting at a skeptic of automated cars in an urban environment but based on what i saw and heard throughout the day i must say my mind is -- more open on this topic and i think the city council is going to give self-driving cars the green light. to an audience at the swedish embassy in washington, car manufacturer volvo showed isal getting into a car and becoming part of a platoon of vehicles. the lead vehicle is piloted by a human driverment once they're accepted the driver in the car can turn around and play with the kids. this is not animation. the cars in line behind the truck are effectively driverless. google is also experimenting with self-driving vehicles and in this company demonstration

video they asked californian steve mahan who is blind to sit bee hind the wheel -- behind the wheel. >> autodriveing. >> away we go. >> reporter: the google vehicle recognizes a stop sign, checks for cross traffic and continues. navigating to the parking lot of a taco stand to the ordering station, and then to the drive- in window where the blind driver gets a burrito to go. it uses radar, cameras and spinning laser beams to guide it and it keeps learning. >> and so while you may have driven i don't know 15,000 miles over the last year our vehicles have driven about 300,000 miles. they get all of the experience and learning and we get to put that into the vehicle. >> reporter: the d.c. council is considering enabling legislation where in the district would join california, nevada and florida in allowing testing of driverless cars. several council members have already been passengers in the google car. >> in may i actually rode in an autonomous vehicle through

downtown d.c.. the experience was remarkable for its unremarkableness. >> reporter: sponsors of the legislation say it needs tweaking but the ing driverless experimental vehicles in d.c. will likely come to a committee vote within weeks. so the 64 zillion dollar question is when will consumers get to buy self-driving cars? well, volvo and daimler favor incremental introductions. safety feature by safety feature. google is going for the whole ball of wax but the company wouldn't offer a specific timeline for widespread consumer use. but it was clear from my interview with the head technical guy on the google project, they already think the cars on the road in california are safer than cars being driven by human drivers. laura? >> safer? i'm still -- oh. boy, i'm -- i'm surprised. >> they can peak decisions. they can make decisions in microseconds. >> how much are these going to

>> good to be back. >> it's meant to really compete with other tablets from companies say like google right? >> right, i brought a nexus 7 tablet from google. that's the competition and it's weird, this is actually cheaper, $199 and that's the difference when apple shipped the first ipad they defined the market. in here they're getting into the cheaper smaller end of the market after other people had their mistakes and learned from them. >> i thought it was the mini ipad. it's here, no, no, it's google. why is this one cheaper? >> i think google is taking a smaller profit margin with less storage. it's a little president thicker and not as -- bit thicker and not as thin as a pencil. tragic. the biggest difference is probably the apps you have on it. with an ipad there's 275,000. there are -- there are not as many apps for android in general. and a lot of the one thomas -- they're like a phone app just blowing up the silver screen. >> let's talk about the apps, i mean part of apple's software success are the apps right? incredible amount of downloads. >> if you have one ipad and you want a second one for your kid,

you know whoever else is at home in the office, it works on that. there's no learning curve. but only use a tablet for use on the web, it's not a big of a difference between ios and android. >> besides the ipad being a quarter thinner than -- the other competition, what makes this so different? we just heard the executive talking act a new design. >> yes, apple takes great pride in their industrial designs, talk about the sort of precision engineered metal finish, precisely put together. they're saying ten hours of battery life. all battery on the inside if you crack it open. supposed to be a very good camera on the back of it. if you want to take pictures like this you can. good high definition camera on the front for your skype or face time video calling. >> based on your experience a recommended item or not? >> i'm going to have to see you know. if the weight difference is that much that i notice it that it's that much more pleasant to carry around one handed.

twitter page. prior to yesterday's decision his bioincluded his tour wins but last night they were removed. today the profile simply says raising my five kids, fighting cancer, swim, bike run and golf whenever i can. he is active on twitter and has nearly four million followers. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky is officially a reds dent of state -- resident of state prison. the assistant football coach has been transferred to the state correctional institute at camp hill. he'll only stay there for a short time before he's assigned to another facility where he will serve 30 to 60 years for sexually abusing ten boys. sandusky is trying to get a new trial or have his convictions thrown out. we've all heard of fantasy football but players at a high school in california were playing a much different game that has one community in an uproar. we'll have the details. >> plus, did you see this? find out where a high school soccer game spiraled out of control. this one got bad.

did you see it in the final seconds of a minnesota high school soccer game spiraled into a brawl on the pitch. it started with a shove and within seconds as you can see team members on both sides really going after each other while coaches tried to stop them. after everything was over, players said they didn't understand why a member of the winning team would start a fight. >> one of their kids swung at our players and -- then it escalate from there a lot farther than it should have gone. >> just kind of disappointed that -- section final would have to end like that. for really no apparent reason. >> looks like consequences here. one player needed stitches if his lip and police are considering assault charges. the state high school league is

also investigating. parents of some california high school athletes have learned their sons formed what they called a fantasy league for sex. the boys get points if they have sex with female students and they might not be disciplined at all by the school. reporter paul chambers explains what's been going on. >> reporter: piedmont high school is the home of the highlanders. also home to a controversial organization. school officials say the male varsity sports teams set up what they call a fantasy slut league. >> just the title alone to me is very demeaning. >> reporter: the school's been investigating the fantasy league on friday the school principal sent a letter home to students and parents stating -- >> reporter: we're told the league consisted of female students being drafted and then male students would earn points for documenting sexual activities with those females. most people in piedmont wouldn't comment on this issue,

but those who did are disappointed. >> it's always a surprise. but it happens. a lot more than you'd like to think it does. >> i would say that i hope they would rethink that and that the young men would respect the women and think about that could be their moms or their sisters. >> reporter: also in that letter, the principal says students felt pressured to participate and/or lacked confidence to overtly stop it. and went on to say in some cases alcohol was involved. a letter from the principal stated there will be an assembly to start the issues. however since they happened off school grounds no disciplinary action will be taken. >> the principal released the statement today, he says -- a surprise snowstorm slammed northern california with an early blast of winter.

the snow turned blue cannon white as forecasters predicted up to 2 feet of snow in the northern sere have neves. the -- sierra neves. the storm caused major travel problems along interstate 80. but they're close to ski time. >> keep it out there. >> don't need it here yet but we're not getting it here yet. >> you know we're in the 80s today and in some places i can see across there. 82 degrees right now for fredericksburg. i'll share with you guys in a moment. but out west, when it's chilly this time of year and you have these big snowstorms coming into the -- the western united states that usually bodes well for us. >> uh-huh. >> the opposite happens too you know. next week we may be on the receiving end of some much colder temperatures coming our way. look at all the color out there too. and you know these -- these longer nights and these cooler nights really help to facilitate those leaves changing colors. not so much these warm temperatures.

cooler temperatures help too. but we're right here in the middle of a bit of the indian summer-type of situation. 77 washington. i know we haven't had the first freeze here in the city but we've had the first freeze in the suburbs and i think it qualifies. 82 degrees fredericksburg. 81 for culpeper and manassas right now. a wonderful 79 degrees. this is your evening forecast. there'll be some clouds but it's going to stay dry. so don't worry about it. and i suggest you get out there and enjoy it too because temperatures will be dropping down into the 60s and it will be real, real good. here's the nation and you can see temperatures cincinnati 76. st. louis 76. little rock 81 and dallas 83. and we'll have temperatures around here tomorrow in the lower 80s so where they're at 81 in little rock right now it will look like that here for us. wichita 90 degrees and i think you can j get a seasons -- just get a sense of the colder temperatures back out to the northwest. that's where a big trough of low pressure has dug in. we get the benefit of high pressure on this side of the

united states. so that means nice, warm conditions. oh and by the way, this warm trend is going to continue. it gets warmer before it even gets cooler. notice tomorrow's 81-degree high. here in the city, i mean we're talking probably lower maybe even a few mid 80s down to the south. fredericksburg earlier was up degrees so technically that applies. already had some middle 80s down there. thursday is good too. 76 degrees. i think we'll have some clouds again tomorrow. much like what we've had today. not so many clouds on thursday. thursday looks like we'll have a little bit more in the way of sunshine. little bit cooler because it looks like the wind is going to switch to the east and the southeast. that will cool us off just a little bit. so satellite and radar together, you can see clouds coming on across. don't worry about that green right there. that's just some fall stuff that got put into the radar situation there. so no need to worry about any rain just clouds all the rain has stayed well to the north of

us. now listen, this is where things get interesting because down the caribbean, there's a new tropical storm. actually sandy formed yesterday. wind is 50 miles per hour. movement is to the north and northeast at 6 miles per hour. pressure is dropping. with the movement to the north and to the northeast, it looks like it's going to head right up over jamaica. right up over cuba and head up through the bahamas and it is forecast to briefly become a category 1 hurricane as it moves over jamaica but as it moves over cuba, it looks like it will weaken back down to a tropical storm. why is this important? all indications are right now it looks like as it moves through the bahamas, it will bend out to the east towards bermuda. but some of the forecast guidance into next week suggests that sandy will move back towards the east coast. now, right now it looks like it will move in north of the mid- atlantic. but we can be dealing with the remnants of this or tropical
